Gulf Bridge International (GBI), the Middle East's first privately-owned submarine cable operator, has completed the landing of its new cable at Vodafone Qatar's international cable landing station located north of Doha.

The cable system is to provide an alternative connection from Qatar to the outside world, and significantly increase Qatar's international call and data capacity. The cable landing near Doha is one of 10 planned cable landings around the Gulf region.

John Tombleson, Vodafone Qatar's acting CEO, said that the arrival of the GBI system in the country marks an exciting new stage of national economic growth and growth in competition in the Qatar's telecommunications market.

The GBI cable system is a high-capacity, fibre optic cable that will connect all the countries of the Gulf region to each other and provide onward connectivity to Europe, Africa and Asia.

Ahmed Mekky, board member and CEO of GBI, said: "Qatar is currently experiencing incredible economic growth and this is driving a significant increase in international traffic. This new connection will be able to support forecast future growth and provide greater diversity.

"This cable landing is the first of the two stations we will have in Qatar, and it keeps us well on track to launch our services later this year", he added.

In May 2010, Qatari incumbent Qtel signed a deal with GBI to provide a landing station in the country.

GBI recently made its first gulf cable landing in the UAE on March 14, 2011.

GBI has already signed landing party agreements with Batelco in Bahrain, STC in Saudi Arabia, and Iraq Telecommunications and Post Company (ITPC).
