GlobalFoundries to build $6bn fab in Abu Dhabi
New plant planned to go online by 2015
GlobalFoundries will spend $6 billion on the Abu Dhabi fab.
GlobalFoundries has announced that it intends to build a semiconductor factory in Abu Dhabi, to be operational by 2015.
The fab will cost $6 billion, according to Reuters.
GlobalFoundries is joint operation between Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), and AMD. The company already has existing fabs in Germany and Singapore, and is constructing a new plant in the US.
"The region is savvy and tech-hungry and ATIC's plans helps drive the 2030 vision of Abu Dhabi's diversification. The goal is for Global Foundries to be financially sustainable," an unnamed spokesman told Reuters.
