Rackspace has signed a deal with Akamai that will see the public cloud service company offer the content optimisation specialist's technologies as part of its cloud hosting services.

Under the agreement, Rackspace will integrate Akamai's various technologies into its solutions, though it downplayed the significance of the deal, stating that it has worked with both Akamai and its customers closely in the past.

The first part of the deal will see Akamai's content delivery optimisation technologies integrated into Rackspace's cloud hosting technologies in order to reduce latency issues, and to allow it to better compete with rival Amazon's elastic cloud computing (EC2) offering.

The deal will also see Rackspace reselling Akamai's technologies across the world, including in the Middle East.

Akamai's services in the Middle East are hosted by Etisalat after the two companies struck a deal in early 2008.
