Hitachi GST has come out with new 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch high capacity drives that are designed to use lower power, run quieter and be highly reliable for storing and streaming digital content.

The drives are optimized for digital video recorders, IPTV set-top-boxes, video surveillance and hard drive embedded TVs. The 3.5-inch CinemaStar 5K2000 series comes in capacities of 2TB and 1.5TB, whereas the 2.5-inch CinemaStar CK750 series has 750GB, 640GB and 500GB capacities.

The drives have multiple form factors for a variety of different needs which allows the CinemaStar series for DVR manufacturers to increase their offerings to the end user. The range starts at high capacity, high performance multi-function systems and diversifies into more economical units. All CinemaStar drives have advanced features such as SmoothStream and Coolspin technology, A/V streaming performance enhancements and HiVERT technology for better power efficiency, and environmental optimisation.

The 2.5-inch offerings of the CinemaStar C5K750 family support multi-tuner HD streaming and come in 375GB high capacity solutions for manufacturers who would like to create video recording and playback in hard drive-embedded TVs and DVRs. The CineStar C5K750 drives are Hitachi's first in the region with ‘Advanced format' that changes the size of the physical sectors on the hard drive from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes. The advantage of Advanced format platform is that the drive is more efficiently, and allows for increased drive capacities and improved data integrity at higher storage densities.

Hitachi claims that the drives run at a meager 0.5 watts at low power idle and 1.5W during the read\write cycles. The barely audible 2.3 idle bels, makes the drive, quieter, smaller and power-efficient thus being used as viable DVR solutions in a living room. Due to this extremely low power supply, the power supplies are smaller and very little cooling is needed as the drives wont tend to overheat.

The 3.5-inch variant has upto 2TB of capacity and also features CoolSpin technology. The A/V performance, low power and large video capacity, enables cable, satellite, STB and surveillance systems to digitally record and playback multiple video streams simultaneously. These drives can store approximately 1000 more standard videos and 250 more HD Videos than its predecessor.

The CinemaStar 5K2000 and C5K750 families are now shipping to customers worldwide.
