Of the two Radeon HD GPUs AMD released, the HD 6870 is the faster and more expensive. As a result the XFX Radeon HD 6870 HD-687A-ZNFC costs a substantial US $319.
Running our H.A.W.X, World in Conflict and Heaven v2.0 benchmark tests at 1680 x 1050 pixels, the card managed figures of 85fps, 61fps and 39.0fps respectively. These are the highest results in this grouptest and whereas the Radeon HD 6850 is slightly slower than the GTX 460, the Radeon HD 6870 is much quicker.
Upping the resolution to 1920 x 1200 pixels, the card performed admirably once again. It returned results of 73fps, 54fps and 34.6fps. These figures were much faster than the GTX 460 managed and are in fact fairly close to the higher-end GeForce GTX 470.
Like its less expensive 6850 counterpart, the HD-687A-ZNFC follows AMD's reference specifications and so the card's GPU runs at a frequency of 900MHz. The 1GB of GDDR5 memory meanwhile ticks along at 4200MHz. And compared to the Radeon HD 6850 this GPU packs 1120 stream processors rather than 960.
This XFX card also uses a standard AMD reference cooler and, surprisingly, is much quieter than the custom cooling system used by the Radeon HD 6850 card. The latter seemed to run in high gear throughout our benchmark test period.
