Managed services specialist eHosting DataFort has said that the Middle East market is in a better position to take advantage of cloud computing than markets like Western Europe and North America, as it formally launches its own cloud service.

Speaking at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK, the company said that because most enterprises and small to medium sized businesses don’t have the expensive legacy systems their counterparts in more developed markets do, firms in the Middle East have a unique opportunity to leapfrog their counterparts. However, eHDF echoed the comments of many of their counterparts exhibiting at GITEX: specifically that many people still don’t understand exactly what cloud technology is.

“Many of the people that we’ve spoken to are currently using cloud-based services, they just don’t realise it,” says David Corriveau, of Radix Technologies, with which eHDF has announced a partnership at GITEX. “Once we tell them that online email services like Hotmail and Gmail are cloud-based, they suddenly feel a lot more confident about using the technology in their own companies.”

“One of the things we’ve realised at this year’s event is that there is a lot of confusion about exactly what the cloud is and how it will work once their business has implemented it,” says Sachin Bhardwaj of eHosting DataFort.

“The partnership with Radix will mean that we can bring the benefits of the cloud to our customers without the need to have in house experience or technical expertise,” adds Bhardwaj. “A lot of the people we meet at GITEX are what we’d class as small and medium businesses.”
