A balance of centralised control and local flexibility is the key for companies in securing their data, according to Sean Tang, Director of International Business at LaserFiche, an enterprise content management solutions provider which is exhibiting at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK.

Tang says information governance is currently a major focus of the firm, which has developed a range of software solutions that tackle digital security and data protection.

“It’s important for us to offer solutions that centralise data and control but offer local flexibility of the distribution of the information – making sure the right people have access to the right information and only the information they should have access to,” he says.

He says the company sits “in the backbone of an existing company infrastructure as the repository or the silo where you store all your information.” From here, LaserFiche develops a solution that ties in multiple, graduated levels of security.

“The standard practice that’s been going on for many years for most people is to store data on the company network. They don’t understand that in this age, that poses security risks but also the level of compliance is changing too,” says Tang.

Another element that the firm specialises in is data protection. “What happens in case of a fire, or a flood?” Tang asks. “If you have all your records in your warehouse and a storm occurs. In Oman a few years ago there was an earthquake and I think a lot of records were destroyed.”

He says backing up data and regular intervals in one of LaserFiche’s secure datacentres helps to mitigate the potential risk of losing the information.
