Intel and the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), inaugurated the region's first Centre of Excellence for Wireless Applications (CEWA) in Riyadh yesterday.

The centre is intended to drive research and development into wireless applications in the Kingdom and the wider region, in line with Intel's Digital Transformation Initiative, as well as supporting businesses and other organisations in wireless deployments.

HH Prince Dr Turki Saud Mohammad Al Saud, Vice President for Research Institutes of KACST, opened the centre, and will act as chairman for the facility.

Commenting on CEWA, HH Prince Dr. Turki Saud Mohammad Al Saud said: "Research is a fundamental pillar to support Saudi Arabia's diversifying economy and it is important for our universities and research institutions to work with global leaders like Intel in the Middle East.  By partnering with Intel on CEWA, KACST has positioned itself at the forefront of the development of wireless technology, networks and applications for the region."

CEWA will offer expertise and consultative services to operators, governments, vendors and regulators to drive wireless applications and provide performance labs to evaluate and optimize wireless networks. The centre will also focus on R&D and offering managed services, and holds a range of reference literature and research papers on wireless technologies, training and development.

Thomas Kilroy, Intel's Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Sales and Marketing Group commented: "Intel has given an undertaking, through its Digital Transformation Initiative, to be at the forefront of technology innovation and capacity building in the Middle East. CEWA gives us a unique and valuable facility to significantly accelerate research, learning and understanding of wireless technology."
