UAE authorities are "very optimistic" that an agreement can be reached with Research in Motion over BlackBerry monitoring, according to a Bloomberg report.

The news agency quoted the secretary general of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, as saying that "Talks are very advanced and positive".

The remarks come ahead of a ban on BlackBerry messenger and email services which is due to come into place on 11th October. The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority says that the security of BlackBerry services means that UAE authorities are not able to monitor communications to track criminal activity, in contradiction of the country's telecoms regulations.
