Riverbed has released the latest version of its mobile WAN optimization solution, Steelhead Mobile 3.1, which has been designed to offer improved performance for Microsoft applications, Citrix virtual desktops and Apple Mac laptop users.

The new version is intended to enable new technologies over the WAN for mobile workers, to improve performance and stability for mobile workers.

For mobile Citrix desktop users, Steelhead Mobile 3.1 tackles the key problem of reducing latency for users, and includes enhanced functionality, along with simpler configuration for easier set up. Steelhead also has better performance for Citrix virtual desktop users at the branch office and remote and small office level. The new version also gives mobile workers the same acceleration capabilities for Citrix XenApp as fixed users, with faster performance and bandwidth savings of up to 50 to 80% over uncompressed desktop traffic.

Steelhead Mobile 3.1 is the only mobile WAN optimization solution for Apple Mac desktops and laptops. Using the same Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS), Steelhead Mobile Mac client will extend optimization to mobile Mac, and allow them to run Mac and PC applications simultaneously, with the flexibility to accelerate whichever applications are needed, independent of the underlying operating system.

For Microsoft, the new version includes performance enhancements for key enterprise applications, including official support both network and application layer optimizations for Exchange 2010, to give remote workers see data reductions of up to 97% and up to 30 times faster performance; secure acceleration for encrypted MAPI, improving response times by up to 45 times; and enhanced optimization for SharePoint and Microsoft Online, with up to 30 times faster document check in and out with SharePoint, and 30% reduction in latency and speed response times to give LAN-like speeds across the WAN for navigation within the SharePoint Portal.

"Organizations have struggled to deliver IT resources to an increasingly mobile workforce. The introduction of new technologies and platforms to the global IT infrastructure further complicates the ability of an IT organization to provide a consistent experience to end users no matter their location," said Apurva Davé, vice president of product marketing at Riverbed. "Steelhead Mobile 3.1 helps organizations of any size overcome the performance challenges involved in delivering business-critical applications and data to their remote workers."
