The Mafia II computer game has been banned in the UAE by the National Media Council, a Dubai-based games distributor told Arabian Business.

The video game, which was expected to be launched in the UAE at the end of August, has been banned by the National Media Council (NMC), confirmed Nitin Mathew, marketing manager of Dubai-based Red Entertainment Distribution.

Mathew said he was informed of the ban on 25th August and that the NMC made the decision to implement the ban due to excessive violence and nudity contained in the game.

He added that his company distributes around 100 to 150 games a year in the UAE, but he said that only around four or five games have so far been banned this year by the NMC, including Heavy Rain from Sony and Darksiders from THQ.

Mafia II is the sequel to Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, which was also banned in the UAE.

Developed by 2K Czech, it is designed to play on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows games systems. Set in the 1940s and 1950s, the game is set in the fictional city of Empire Bay and involves a former criminal and soldier joining forces with the Sicilian Mafia to start a drugs business.

Does it apply to the ones that could be downloaded using steam account? I don't think so... I get most of my games using digital downloads from steam rather than going to a shop and buying them... And I am a PC gamer.

The reality of Mideast contains much more violence.
Its a very thematic and nice game, don't think it was to influence youngsters
