Huawei has unveiled a new Android-based smartphone range, which it says will make the smartphone segment more affordable for all users.

The IDEOS smartphone, which runs on Android 2.2 (‘Froyo'), will be priced between $100 and $200, and is designed to provide easy mobile internet access.

The IDEOS name is intended to reflect creativity and inspiration, according to Huwaei, with ‘ID' representing the industrial design-centric hardware platform, ‘OS' standing for the operating system, and ‘E' for the evolution to mobile Internet.

The handset will provide downlink speeds of more than 7.2Mb/s, WCDMA and WiFi dual network support, and can also act as a WiFi router for up to eight devices at a time. The handset also supports functions such as voice dialling, voice navigation, and the ability to run applications off the SD card, and compatibility with the Android Market application store.

The IDEOS will be available in black, yellow, blue, and purple, with launches planned for Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America and Latin America.

Kevin Tao, CEO of Huawei Device, said: "The popularity of the smartphone is one of the key tools to bringing people into the ‘Golden Age of Mobile Broadband,' which is linked to Google's mobile Internet strategy.

"We are proud to have already achieved our goal from early 2010 of developing a US$150 smartphone with an excellent user experience. The IDEOS is an affordable option, designed to lower barriers to entry to allow easy mobile Internet access," he added.

Huawei also announced the launch of three other Android-based phones, the U8800, the U8500 and the U8300 entry-level smartphone.

The U8800 is powered by Android 2.2, with a 3.8 inch wide screen, and integrated HSPA+ capabilities to support downlink speeds of up to 14 Mb/s. The U8800 can also be used as a 3G modem and as a WiFi router for up to eight devices.

The U8500, running on Android 2.1, has a 3.2 inch touch screen and optical track-pad. The phone has been designed for optimal mobile use, and comes with HSDPA and WiFi capabilities.

The U8300 is also based on Android 2.1, and has been designed for younger mobile users, with QWERTY keyboard and a touch-screen in a small, chocolate-bar form factor, with the most popular social networking applications pre-installed.
