12 months is a long time, especially in these days of 24 hour news, constantly updated websites and social media - what happened last week can feel like a lifetime ago. Projects come and go, products are launched, software is released, and time moves on at its own pace.

Regardless of the industry you work in, as a member of the tech fraternity, it's hard not to be swept away by the continual focus on the ‘next big thing'. The excitement, interest and anticipation that surrounds huge events like GITEX is a prime example of this mentality, but don't worry, it's a good thing.

That said, the ACN Arab Technology Awards are a unique oasis of calm in the madness of the future. A chance to pause, reflect and congratulate the very best our peers have achieved in the previous 12 months: feats even more worthy of adulation, especially considering the market place is still tough.

As with last year, 2010's winners will be those companies that have made a genuine impact on their market. And be under no illusions - your actions do have an impact on everyone's lives. Your IT projects can make peoples' lives easier, cheaper, more efficient or even just possible.

Anyone can give out awards. What matters is the stature they hold amongst your peers. It doesn't matter whether you're a huge multinational with an IT budget of several million dollars, or a three-man local firm that had to take out a bank loan - what matters is whether or not it is a shining example of best practice within the region.

Now in its sixth year, the ACN Arab Technology Awards are the only awards in the Middle East that recognise your efforts that can claim to genuinely hold sway over the region's key decision makers. That's why if you you've been involved in a project that deserves to be recognised, then you need to send in a nomination. And remember, you have to be in it to win it.

You can find out more about this year's awards, and download the nomination form, by visiting the official website.
