Telecom vendor Huawei and Australia's incumbent operator Telstra have tested LTE on 1800MHz spectrum.

While 1800MHz spectrum is used globally for 2G services, it is also viewed as having significant potential for LTE.

As operators move to deploy LTE networks, it is expected that this spectrum will complement 2600MHz and 700MHz bands, which are expected to be made available through the digital dividend.

Michael Rocca, Telstra's chief operations officer, said that exploring LTE's performance across a variety of frequency bands was vital to produce technology that works for operators and customers.

"Our trials with Huawei are giving us valuable insights into the potential of LTE technology at 1800MHz and helping Telstra understand how we can make best use of both existing and potential future spectrum assets to continue to deliver a world class mobile broadband service," he said.

Last month, Telstra said it had tested LTE technology with vendor Nokia Siemens Networks, achieving download speeds of 100Mbps across a distance of 75 km.
