Kaspersky Lab is offering free smartphone protection during the 2010 World Cup.

The security company is offering a free download of its Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 solution, which will be active for the duration of the tournament.

Kaspersky says that the software will help protect smartphones that might be lost or stolen while attending venues to watch World Cup matches.

Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 allows the user to send a pre-defined SMS to their handset, which then blocks the phone, to prevent anyone from using it, while still displaying the contact details of the owner will on the screen of a blocked smarthphone.

The location of a lost smartphone can be pinpointed using its built-in GPS module, and if the SIM is replaced, the owner will receive immediate notification of the phone's new number. For additional security, the user can also choose to remotely wipe data from the handset.

The free trial can be downloaded from http://www.kaspersky.COM/secure-mobile-championship.
