German automaker Volkswagen wants to be known as the first car manufacturer to use open innovation to further develop its products by organising a global developer competition, inviting users to jointly develop new infotainment applications with the company.

€14,000 (AED 60,000), with the winners being offered placement at Volkswagen Group Research offices in China, Japan, Germany or the United States.

Participants need to outline the idea behind the app, provide a design of the user interface and use Adobe Flash/Flex for programming.

The submission deadline for the competition is June 30th after which the most innovative app will be chosen by the App My Ride online community and a jury consisting of Volkswagen managers and external experts.

"The participants are supposed to imagine what the purpose of their ideal Infotainment system is and how it would work and now they have the opportunity to make it a reality. At the same time, you can analyse the existing apps on our platform and discuss their design, uses and purposes," explains Dr Peter Oel, head of Control Designs and Drivers at Volkswagen Group Research.

SAE Institute in Dubai has already confirmed their interest in participating in the App My Ride.

"The App My Ride competition is a great opportunity for students as well as staff members of our school to bring their day to day learning process to world class competition level," said Amir Jahanlou, senior animation lecturer at SAE Institute Dubai. "To me, that clearly states the opportunities out there for application developers, and I believe this initiative will certainly help raise the bar of application development in this region."
