Etisalat and Du have officially launched their 3D television services today.

Etisalat is initially offering the service at no extra charge to its eLife triple play and E-Vision customers, while rivals Du are doing the same for du TV and du TV+ customers.

Du has also set up "the only 3D broadcast channel available today in the MENA region". Channel 699, under the basic TV package, covers fashion, art, travel, sport and lifestyle.

Du is also in talks with various content providers to bring more 3D content to its TV subscribers. The operator however makes no mention of broadcasting the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

If Etisalat customers want to watch the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D on Al Jazeera Sports channel for free, they need to be signed up to the Premier (AED 399/month) and Max (AED 539/month) package, or be an E-Vision 2010 FIFA World Cup package subscriber.

"We realize that the 3D TV service is still in its nascent stage globally, however in line with Etisalat's strategy to provide advanced technologies in the UAE, we are now launching this service and are excited to provide it to our customers without any additional costs," commented Khalifa Al Shamsi, senior VP of Marketing at Etisalat.
