UAE incumbent Etisalat has launched an offer allowing its fixed-line subscribers to make international calls at a discounted rate.

The offer, which runs from May 10 to August 9, allows fixed line subscribers to make international calls at a rate of AED0.50 ($0.13) a minute to a single selected country, for a monthly fee of AED20 per month.

As an alternative to the monthly fee, users can pay a connection charge of AED1 for each call to their selected country, in order to gain the discounted AED0.50 per minute rate.

Under the operator's regular international tariff structure, the cheapest peak time destinations, including the USA and the Philippines, cost AED2.12 a minute, while the most expensive destinations, including Malta and DRC, cost AED9.47 a minute.

The offer comes as Etisalat continues to battle falling fixed line subscriber numbers. According to its first quarter results for 2010, Etisalat's fixed line subscriber base continued the decline experienced last year, with the company reporting 1.3 million subscribers for the first quarter of the year, compared with 1.31 million at the end of 2009.
