Assassin’s Creed 2 (AS2) is a straight up sequel. Because of this we recommend playing its predecessor first, as the storyline picks up from where the original left off.

Once again you take on the role of Desmond Miles who is still a prisoner at Abstergo Industries. The game opens with Desmond and Lucy (a former researcher) escaping Abstergo, so that Desmond can use a different ‘Animus’ in safety. This is so he can gain the assassin skills of his ancestors and to help find the other Pieces of Eden.

Like the original game AS2 has Desmond exploring memories of his ancestors. This time around Desmond views the memories of Ezio Auditoreda Firenze in the late 15th and early 16th century in Italy. In line with this the game’s storyline includes a number of real-life historic events, along with famous people and places. So, during your nonlinear jaunt through AS2, you’ll encounter Leonardo da Vinci and come across the Grand Canal.

In terms of gameplay Assassin’s Creed 2 follows the style of its predecessor in the sense that you have to complete various missions across its virtual world. The game offers over 200 missions though some of these are not related to the main story.

Whereas AS became repetitive fairly quickly, playing AS2 and completing missions this time around is a far more enjoyable and challenging experience thanks to a number of improvements; you can blend in with crowds more realistically because whereas the original only allowed you to blend in with a specific group of people (which was unrealistic), AS2 allows you to hide amongst the general population. You can even dive under water though if you wish to spend money, you can reduce your notoriety by bribing the right people or even by assassinating corrupt officials.

Assassin’s Creed 2 also boasts Hollywood-blockbuster production. On the visual front the graphics engine does a brilliant job of creating a believable, living and breathing virtual world. Some of the outdoor landscapes will literally take your breath away and the same can be said of Ezio’s movements; he moves around and performs acrobatics
in near life-like style. The voice acting is also brilliant and this combined with the excellent musical score helps to completely immerse you into the game.

For: This title is the equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster; it boasts an excellent storyline, fantastic audio and visual effects,
tons of action and likeable characters.
Verdict: Assassin’s Creed 2 doesn’t put a foot wrong. It’s a far better game than its predecessor in every way.
