Display complete specs ›The GT 240 sits in a higher price bracket than the GT 220, though both GPUs target budget buyers.
Like the lower cost GT 220 the GT 240 is produced using a 40nm fabrication process but runs at a higher core frequency of 550MHz. Card manufacturers have the choice of which memory to use - either GDDR3 or GDDR5 - with our Galaxy test sample featuring 512MB of GDDR5 running at 1700MHz (effectively 3400MHz). Other
similarities the GT 240 shares with the GT 220 are that it features DirectX 10.1 support and lacks multi-GPU support.
Running the GT 240 through our benchmark gauntlet it outpaced the GT 220 by sizeable margins. However, like the GT 220 the GT 240 performs best at the resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. The Galaxy returned framerates of 42fps, 37fps
and 54.2fps in our H.A.W.X, World in Conflict and Company of Heroes tests.
Increasing the resolution to 1680 x 1050 pixels the Galaxy's performance suffered; framerates dropped to 27fps, 24fps and 33.1fps. This means that only Company of Heroes is playable without stuttering.
Retailing for US $110 the GT 240 is a disappointment compared to the GT 220
because despite its higher price, the GT 240 doesn't pack enough punch to play at
1680 x 1050 pixels. Though the GT 240 offers better performance at 1024 x 768
pixels it doesn't justify its almost $50 higher price tag.
Verdict: A good buy if you game at 1024 x 768 but it doesn't have the horsepower for 1680 x 1050 gaming.
