More than 200 gamers from the Middle East are expected to take part in the Dubai chapter of the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) 2010 competition.

The winner of the Dubai contest, which will take place on January 21st till 23rd at Dubai Mall, will go on to represent the United Arab Emirates at a regional qualifying event in Italy and perhaps secure a place at the FIWC10 Grand Final, which will take place in Barcelona, Spain on 1st May 2010.

Alternatively, players have the chance to participate in the FIWC online season. The first phase, which concluded on December 18th 2009, saw over 400,000  players from around the world compete online on EA Sports FIFA 10 using the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network to secure the first 11 places at this year's grand final.

Until yesterday, online registrations were being accepted through the www.dubaifiwc.com site, out of which 224 participants will be randomly selected to compete. An additional 32 gamers will be chosen on a first-come-first-serve basis by registering at the FIWC stand outside SEGA Republic on Thursday January 21st from 11am.

"With the FIFA World Cup 2010 around the corner, FIFA fans around the world are itching to show off their skills in this year's FIWC tournament and we guarantee they won't be disappointed. This is a great example of what happens when you take one of the world's best-selling games, mix it together with the world's favourite games console and open it up to the community. We are expecting to see great regional talent and wish the UAE participants good luck!" said Tim Stokes, sales and marketing Director, PlayStation Division - Sony Gulf.

Last year FIWC saw over 10,000 players compete at 19 global live qualifier events, while 515,000 players battled for 13 available online qualification spots.
