UAE operator Etisalat has selected Alcatel-Lucent to speed up the deployment of its nationwide fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network.

Under the multi-million Euro deal, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its GPON (gigabit passive optical network) technology to connect 50,000 households and business customers to the operator's fibre optic network.

Etisalat said it will use the vendor's technology to provide customers with simultaneous access to several high-definition TV channels, a video on demand library, and high speed internet access.

Last month, Etisalat launched services over its FTTH network in Abu Dhabi under the banner ‘elife' and  insisted that the UAE capital would be the first capital city in the world to have a complete fibre-optic network.

"Etisalat's FTTH roll-out in the UAE - branded eLife - positions Abu Dhabi to become the first capital city in the world with 100% fibre deployment by the end of this year. UAE will be one of the first countries in the world to have a nationwide fibre optics coverage by 2011," said Essa Al Haddad, chief marketing officer for Etisalat UAE.

Etisalat said in 2008 that it had hired Chinese vendor Huawei to deploy the country's FTTH network, although the operator has released few details about the work carried out by vendors on the network since.

A spokesperson from Alcatel-Lucent said that Etisalat is working with three vendors on the FTTH network,  and that Alcatel-Lucent was hired because its "solution streams well technically and economically with Etisalat ambition to have a nationwide FTTH deployment ready to provide the latest services and technologies, as well as a choice of great entertainment."
