Google proved there was truth to the rumours by finally taking the veil off its Nexus One smartphone yesterday. The firm also announced it will be sold through the new Google online store that will ship Android devices directly to customers.

"The goal of this new consumer channel is to provide an efficient way to connect Google's online users with selected Android devices. We also want to make the overall user experience simple: a simple purchasing process, simple service plans from operators, simple and worry-free delivery and start-up," stated Mario Queiroz, VP of Product Management.

Customers can purchase the new HTC-built Nexus One without operator service for $529 or with service from T-Mobile USA for $179 (two-year contract). It comes with a 3.7" OLED touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera and runs Android 2.1 with software that includes innovations like a voice-enabled keyboard, Live Wallpapers, a 3D photo gallery and the regular suite of Google mobile applications including Gmail and Google Maps.

Google is also expected to ship Nexus One devices to buyers in Singapore, Hong Kong, Britain.

Analysts remain sceptical about the Nexus One's ability to take on the iPhone however with IDC research director John Delaney commenting that it is an expensive piece of kit to acquire and that there's "...nothing obvious about the Nexus One that marks it out as a device that can revolutionise its product category, the way the iPhone did."

While the highly-publicised smartphone is not available to customers in the Middle East just yet, Google has promised to "add more operators, more devices and more countries in the future" without disclosing a definitive timeline.
