After two weeks of testing the projector we're happy to say the answer is a resounding yes. In line with its price tag this Bravia model sports top specifications including native 1080p support, a brightness rating of 800 ANSI Lumens and a contrast ratio of 120,000:1. As a result the VPL-VW85 absolutely blew us away when it came to its projection performance.
Feeding the Sony a number of Blu-ray movies, such as Casino Royale, Iron Man and The Fast and The Furious - via HDMI - the VPL-VW85 performed brilliantly when we used its ‘Cinema mode'. Colour accuracy and brightness was top notch and thanks to the projector's 1080p resolution support, we noticed an astonishing amount of detail on the projection. The Sony's 800 ANSI Lumens brightness rating also meant that even when some ambient light was introduced into the room, we could still easily see what was happening on the projection surface.
Moving onto games the Sony continued its fantastic performance as both 720p and 1080p titles looked brilliant blown up on a big screen. The projector's Motionflow with DarkFrame Insertion technology also helped to deliver smooth, artifact free gaming even when the action became fast-paced.
Verdict: Though expensive the Sony is a cost-effective way to create an impressive, large-screen experience.
