The social networking site Facebook has 10.7 million active users in the Middle East according to data revealed by the specialist intelligence and research firm Inside Facebook.

In the United Arab Emirates, close to 22% of the population is now active on the site with users numbering more than 960,000. UAE-based operator Du recently announced plans to offer a free Facebook Mobility Service to its customers, allowing them to add status updates, send messages and wall posts via SMS, as well as post photos and videos using MMS. In turn, users can also sign up to receive free SMS notifications from Facebook so they're always connected.

Saudi Arabia saw close to 110,000 people sign up for Facebook in just one month bringing its total number of users to 1.07 million but there's more potential for growth since that figure currently represents about 4% of the population.

Qatar is also showing growth with more 207,000 Facebook users, representing more than 24% of its population. In Lebanon and Bahrain, it's more than 15%.

According to the research figures, Egypt has the highest number of Facebook users in the region with 1.89 million users while Oman has the lowest with just 77,180.
