The Indian State of Kerala is seeking to turn itself into the next big IT destination in the country, as rising costs and infrastructure problems hit more established regions.

“Across the state there are new IT parks coming up,” says a member of the local government’s GITEX delegation.

Infopark at Kochi, the renowned commercial capital of the state, is Kerala’s new IT hotspot hosting over 50 IT and ITES companies and over 10,000 professionals.

It offers tailor-made work spaces, “intelligent infrastructure” and end-to-end solutions for global IT/ITES companies.Kerala already has three international airports, a container port with most modern facilities and a wide network of roads and railways. There is also a slew of initiatives to develop scalable infrastructure in the pipeline.

Mega projects in the offing include the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) in Kochi, the International Airport in Kannur and the Metro Rail Project in Kochi. The state’s cost advantages include power and water tariffs that are among India’s lowest. It also has the highest density of technology personnel in the country and the lowest employee attrition rate (5%).

Kerala’s commitment to education is borne out by an impressive portfolio of top-level institutions of higher learning, including the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management in Thiruvananthapuram.

Thanks in part to its pro-enterprise initiatives, Kerala is today home to over 400 IT/ITES companies, including Tata Consultancy Services. Infosys and outsourcing specialist Wipro.
