South Africa’s Unique Mbane is aiming to show that IT innovation is not exclusively the purview of Silicon Valley, with its range of smart metering systems for conserving electrical power.

Headquartered in Port Elizabeth, Unique Mbane manufactures single, and three phase smart metering meters and metering equipment, as well as add-on demand side management apparatus. The energy company also develops the necessary software and applications to drive this range of systems.

Yossuf Jeeva, Chief Executive Officer of Unique Mbane explains why his firm has journeyed from the shores of the Eastern Cape to the sands of the Middle East to show off its range of energy products and services.

“GITEX is recognised as one of the premier symposiums, during which the technology industry showcases the latest developments in various fields. For Unique Mbane, GITEX is the platform upon which the company’s innovative technology can be showcased to a global audience, and furthermore the possibilities of identifying potential synergies with other members of the global technology industry,” he says.

“GITEX is not only an important consideration to success within the Middle Eastern market but by virtue of those in attendance, can lead to the further growth of our global business footprint,” adds Jeeva.

While many companies consider this region as little more than an extension of Asia, Jeeva and his team at Unique Mbane have recognised that the Middle East is in fact, far more valuable: “The Middle Eastern ICT market is recognised as being one of the most resilient and dynamic in the world. This, along with the steady economic growth of the region, results in a potential that is recognised by UMSA.

“The Middle East could thus become one of UMSA’s focal regions on the international landscape,” he believes.

Unique Mbane’s product range has already met with considerable success in its native South Africa, with the firm’s products in use by City of Tshwane Electricity, Mbombela Municipality Electricity, and Ethekwini Municipality. These products include Savelight, its street light load managment unit which can dim high pressure lamps during low activity periods to prevent excessive energy usage.
