I may have been a little too excited about getting my hands on the LG Watch Phone but who can blame me? It's a watch and phone merged into one compact device! And if you've grown up watching Inspector Gadget, you can relate to that.

But did it make me feel super special? Not quite. The expensive device is clearly not made for women but even if you're blessed with big chunky wrists, I dare you to put the watch phone on in under five minutes. It can't be done. The entire team here at ITP.net had a go without much success (yes, it was a slow day). To be fair, one super smart colleague managed to get it on about half an hour later but by then the rest of us had moved on to bigger and not so fiddly things.

Using the device takes a little getting used to - the touchscreen display is small but it's easy enough to get to different functions (text messaging, dialling, connectivity, etc.) once you get used to scrolling through menu pages. It's surprisingly responsive.

And yes, it has a speakerphone option so you don't need to stick the phone in your ear to hold a conversation along with a Bluetooth headset if you don't want the world to hear you.

Call reception quality was excellent, but the power drained really quickly to the point that it had to be charged twice a day in spite of not using it excessively.

The LG watch phone seems like a gimmick and is quite fanciable as a wannabe spy gadget. At dinner one night, the clunky device kept sliding off my wrist and friends quietly watched as I prodded the watch phone and tapped my headset simultaneously for a few good minutes. One finally whispered fiercely into my ear that if I didn't stop behaving like a lunatic, they'd take the watch phone and drop it in their soup. She had a point. The world isn't ready for another clumsy technophile.

I texted her an apology and returned to my Nokia.
