GITEX Shopper & Consumer Electronics Expo will be extended by an extra day this year, to give visitors two weekends of shopping.

The show, which is organised by Dubai World Trade Centre, will now run from Saturday 17th October to Saturday 24th October, at Airport Expo Dubai, in order to meet growing demand from consumers from across the region who visit the show.

The consumer IT and electronics market in the UAE continues to grow, according to figures from Business Monitor International. Sales of computing devices, mobile handsets, and video and gaming products are set to rise from US$2.9 billion in 2008, to US$4.5 billion by 2013, according to the analyst company, with growth driven by ongoing demand for emerging categories of technology, such as 3G mobile handsets, smartphones, LCD and plasma televisions and mobile computing devices.

In 2008, GITEX Shopper attracted 132,761 visitors, resulting in reported sales of AED 112 million (US$30.4m).

As the region’s leading retail expo for consumer electronics, Dubai World Trade Centre has expanded the show to enable more families to attend during the weekends. Many of the region’s leading retailers and PC and consumer electronics vendors have confirmed their participation in the event, which has become one of the most vibrant parts of GITEX Technology Week.

“GITEX Shopper has become synonymous with great choice, quality, and value for money,” said Trixee Loh, Senior Vice President, DWTC. “The show is very family-orientated and the weekends are our most popular days, so this year we are providing more opportunities for people to take advantage of all the great offers.”

Recognising the opportunities for growth in the Middle East, many of the world’s leading consumer electronic brands will be participating this year, including Platinum Sponsor Microsoft and Gold Sponsor HP.
