The industry is gearing up to honour the high fliers and organisations that have been taking networking to the next level at the forthcoming Network Middle East Innovation Awards.

Although this will be the fifth annual awards ceremony the word ‘innovation' has taken on a new meaning this year and is, perhaps, more important than ever before.

With a lot of the industry's ‘yes' men silenced or forced to compromise by the financial crisis, IT managers have had to add a financial expertise string to their bows as the pressure to maintain and improve systems and the delivery of services to the end-user has remained, though budgets have not.

But despite the fact that a great deal of IT spending has been unceremoniously cut, the quality and wealth of nominations submitted for the awards, coupled with the difficulty that the judges faced in narrowing the pack down to the worthy few, demonstrates that there are still plenty of IT managers, CIOs, vendors and integrators that have refused to let financial strife get in the way of innovation.

The entries for last year's awards saw a number of small niche players throw their hats into the ring and this year is no different. While the usual heavy hitters remain committed to the region, a number of the smaller (only in size, not in ambition) outfits have carved substantial shares in the market.

No matter the size of the companies that emerge victorious on the night, all will have done a sterling job as they have had to impress members of our distinguished and industry-worn judge's bench. Among the 17 categories that they have adjudicated on are product awards including the Best Storage Solution Range, the Best Security Solution Range and the Best Application Delivery Range.

On top of that, the Innovation Awards will honour the region's go-to-guys for implementations and project delivery in the Best Systems Integrator Category. And finally, perhaps the most revered category of all in which all the glory is lumped on one hard-working and deserved soul that has done the most to drive IT in their organisation and motivate their IT team through tough times - the Networking Professional of the Year.

The event, which will take place on the 27th September at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Dubai, will be a gala occasion to celebrate these fine individuals and their work, while offering the region's leading users and vendors the opportunity to come together and discuss the future of networking in the region.

I look forward to seeing you there.
