The Imation Multi Media 2.5” Hard Disk Player scores no points for its rather dull name but thankfully regains ground in the functionality department.

The Multi Media drive can be hooked up to a display device via RCA or Component cables (we recommend the latter for the best quality). While these outputs guarantee compatible with the majority of the display devices on the market, we would have liked to have seen a HDMI output. This would not only ensure compatibility with newer screens but would also save you from using two output cables (one for video and one for audio).

In terms of interaction, you can control the Hard Disk Player using the buttons placed on its top surface or via the supplied remote control. The remote offers far more convenience – you can use the drive from the comfort of your couch – but needs to be pointed directly at the hard disk to function. This minor niggle aside the Imation’s onboard interface is supremely easy to work with.

Testing the Imation’s playback quality we found it was satisfactory when playing Standard Definition (SD) and 720p High Definition (HD) content. If you have a lot of SD content the Player offers an upscaling feature but enabling this, we found it didn’t do much to improve the quality. Retailing for US $190 or $0.76 per gigabyte our 250Gbyte test sample isn’t the most value packed external drive we’ve tested but thankfully is quite a speedster when it comes to data transfer performance.

Verdict: A fast and competent multimedia hard drive but it doesn't give you the biggest bangs for your bucks.
