Sony’s VAIO P is the smallest machine the team has ever come across and although it is more expensive than netbooks, given its specs and capabilities, it offers those machines direct competition.

Like all of the netbooks we’ve come across to date, the VAIO P lacks an optical drive and uses Intel’s Atom processor for brainpower. In this case, the machine’s Atom runs at 1.33GHz and is backed by 2Gbytes of memory.

The machine runs Windows Vista Home Premium and while this wouldn’t be our first choice of operating systems – given the light specifications of the machine – the VGN-P13GH/Q is quick enough for everyday application use such as Word processing, e-mail and web browsing. In testing the VAIO also returned a battery life of two hours and 29 minutes, which is quite good given its small battery size. Combine the battery life with the machine’s negligible 620g weight and you have an ultra-portable machine that’s best suited for short business trips.

In terms of niggles, the Sony has a few particularly annoying ones. The first is that the finger pointer isn’t the best in terms of sensitivity. Even after adjusting the speed within Vista, we were still unable to find a comfortable balance. And in terms of the Sony’s screen, while it is bright and capable of vibrant colours, its native 1600 x 768 pixels and small 8-inch screen size made our eyes feel tired after a couple of hours of use.

Verdict: An ultra-portable machine that is a real alternative to bog standard netbooks. Looks great too and feels its price.
