NVidia released the GeForce GTX 295 and GTX 285 simultaneously and of the two, the 285 is designed for high-end users whereas the 295 targets the ultra-high-end market.

In terms of differences between the 285 and 295, the former is a single GPU design whereas the latter employs two GPUs. That said the 285’s single GPU is more powerful in that it features a 648MHz clock frequency, a shader clock of 1476MHz and offers 32 ROPs. The two GPUs used by the 295 however run at 576MHz each, run their shaders at 1242MHz and pack only 28 ROPs per GPU.

Comparing the older GTX 280 to the new 285, the older GPU runs at a frequency of 602MHz and features a shader clock of 1296MHz. However, the biggest difference between the GTX 285 and GTX 280 is that the former GPU is fabricated on the newer 55nm manufacturing process. This makes it power efficient and cooler running.

On the performance front, the GV-N285-1GH-B performed as expected; its results in all our benchmarks were marginally faster than the numbers produced by the older GTX 280 cards. This is due to the slightly higher core, shader and memory frequency that the GTX 285 packs. That said, the difference is far from earth shattering so if you already own a GTX 280, there’s no reason to opt for this slightly faster card.

Verdict: A worthwhile buy only if your existing DirectX 10 graphics card is older than two years old.
