Everyone has spilt a beverage, cup of tea or some other liquid and with more and more people working with their laptops in coffee shops or in their kitchens, the potential for a ruined keyboard and mouse is very high. While washable keyboards have long been a part of the computer landscape, there have been very few mice that can withstand spills. Eager to fill this gap, Belkin has launched its new notebook-aimed mouse known simply as the Washable Mouse.
Belkin’s says its latest creation can withstand the initial spill and, since no one wants to work with a mouse that’s sticky or is covered in stains, a wash after the incident. To put this to the test we spilled a cup of steaming hot coffee on the mouse on purpose and let it sit for a while.
This left a few stains on the body and made the mouse sticky but regardless, the mouse worked flawlessly. Eager to clean up the mouse, we dumped it in a mug of water and ran it over a tap and scrubbed it until it was clean. Plugged back into our laptop, the mouse worked perfectly.
Using the mouse for hours on end, the hand-hugging body and precise optical engine made for a very relaxed usability experience. In the end the only issue we had was with the buttons, which are hidden under the liquid-proof skin and have to be pressed spot on for them to register a click.
Verdict: Belkin’s Washable Mouse works as claimed, so you needn’t ever worry about buying a new mouse when the next liquid-disaster strikes.
