Silicon Power is a Taiwanese company that manufactures a range of products and, like a number of other companies developing memory based products, has recently begun offering Solid State Disks (SSDs). The firm offers these drives with either the Serial ATA or older IDE interface and capacities have reached as high as 128Gbytes.

Our test sample offers 32Gbytes of capacity and at a cost of US $315 is actually very expensive as you’re paying $9.8 per gigabyte. By comparison, Patriot’s Warp 64GB SSD drive (reviewed last month) is a relative bargain given that it offers 64Gbytes of capacity at a cost of just $3.5 per gigabyte.

In terms of performance, this SSD proved quick though it wasn’t as quick as Patriot’s Warp. Running our synthetic HDTach3 benchmark, the Silicon Power produced an average read speed of 120.9Mbytes/sec and a burst speed of 141.9Mbytes/sec. Fast for certain but Patriot’s drive managed an even quicker 140.5Mbytes/sec and 173.7Mbytes/sec respectively. That said, in terms of access performance, both drives were tied at just 0.2ms.

Moving to our real world benchmarks, the Silicon Power once again fell behind. That said, the margins here were much smaller. In our F.E.A.R load test for instance the Silicon Power was just one second slower than Patriot’s Warp and in our Company of Heroes load test, just two seconds slower.

Verdict: Although this SSD performs well, it is difficult to recommend owing to its high price and small capacity.
