Applications and information, carried as data packets across the network, are the lifeblood of a distributed enterprise and that very network is the heart of the delivery chain of most business critical applications. Network performance and availability is paramount to the success of the enterprise and its business activities.

In a drive towards greater competitiveness we are now witnessing a trend towards consolidation of applications and distributed file servers to central locations which can leverage significant cost savings in terms of operational running costs and hardware expenditure, with typically a reduced number of machines serving multiple remote offices. However such savings can soon be eroded by a loss of productivity and even staff morale due to new network performance issues arising from server consolidation.
