Oh dear Apple - this one's up there with Etisalat in the lie/deny/cover-up department.

A report in the Times newspaper, and subsequently spread all over the world, says that Apple tried to silence a family who experienced what could best be described as an explosive failure of an iPod. An offer of a $274 refund, in return for the family's guarantee of silence and a legal threat against speaking out was understandably met with a less-than-positive response from the family.

It's not the first report of spontaneously combusting iPods, and there have been reports of people being burned, but Apple's PR department trotted out its usual 'deny everything' line.

It's more bad press for Apple and its secretive approach to just about anything, but I can't see it impacting sales of iPod particularly. I would like to see what 80's TV action hero-handyman MacGyver would have been able to do with an iPod that could launch itself 10' into the air though...
