Nokia N97: the good, bad and average
By  Vineetha Menon Published  July 19, 2009

I’ve been tinkering with the Nokia N97 for about a week now and must admit to having mixed feelings. Since it was first unveiled at the Nokia World event in Spain last year, the hype surrounding this model was intense with many labeling it a dream phone. Anticipation swelled until it was finally launched in the Middle East early last month. Now great expectations can go one of two ways and with the noisy excited dust finally settling, how does the N97 rate? Not bad, actually.

One of the standout features has to be the tilting 3.5" touch display – it seems like a trivial factor but one that gets you so comfortable that it makes you look at cellphone design in a whole new light.

The phone has been marketed as ‘mobile computer’ and it is – with a little tweaking and enhancement, I’d expect similar models to encroach in the netbook space soon. The customisable screen featuring preferred widgets works like a modern organiser, while the full QWERTY physical keyboard is a change from the touchtastic push we’ve seen lately. (Admittedly, the keypad layout takes some getting used to and is not what you’d want to be stuck using when typing out a long document).

The N97 was always seen as more business-oriented right from the start and my experience with it hasn’t changed that perception, but one of the few letdowns is its sluggish performance and less than wow 5MP camera which, even with autofocus and flash, seemed to generate images of average quality indoors. It might not live up to the very high expectations we had but then, how many phones do?

I enjoy and love my N97... I had to read the book for understanding of some of the great features it has...

Not bad for the price - 450.00 US (I bought the phone at Excite in Kuwait)...
