Gitex starts this morning, or rather, everyone is here at the event, but nothing's really happening. It's the calm before the storm, as the event doesn't really kick off until after the VIP opens the show. Until then, there are last minute finishes being made to stands, and a lot of people milling about shouting into their mobile phones.

It's a contrast to many of the other big technology events I've been to, where the main keynote's often start right on the dot of nine am or earlier, and there's no question of a moveable schedule - everything happens on time or else.

That said, I'm not complaining, as it gives me a chance to get some more coffee and fill the holes in the schedule. Later today we have a keynote from Sun's Scott McNealy, and I'm also supposed to be interviewing McNealy later today too. Dell's Pim Dale is also presenting a keynote, and we'll be bringing you details of both of those as soon as they happen.

The itp.net team are onsite with our colleagues from ITP's stable of leading IT magazines, and also the team from Arabian Business, and we'll be bringing you stories throughout the day.

So keep checking back on www.itp.net/gitex for updates as the show goes on.
