Interesting news slipped out from Etisalat on Wednesday, that the telco has signed a deal with France Telecom to develop digital services and content for home users, including, among other things, a collaboration on a UAE launch for the Warhammer online fantasy roleplaying game.

For those that don't know, Warhammer Online is a fantasy MMORPG which is being touted as the next World of Warcraft, one of the most popular online games going.  A launch by Etisalat would mean that players could play on local servers (presumably) giving a much better service than if they were accesing servers elsewhere. The deal which was announced also includes Etisalat taking some of France Telecoms technology for delivering services to the home, and even a possible collaboration on film development and other entertainment.

While I have no idea what a French-Emirati telecoms film collaboration would produce, but its good to see Etisalat taking such a proactive approach to providing digital entertainment, working with a world leader, and signing an agreement which includes a fair amount of technology collaboration.

Etisalat already offers a fair amount of digital services, including games through its weyak.ae portal, but perhaps this new agreement is an indicator that the telco is looking to develop more advanced online communities around different digital services, which would be very welcome for consumers, and with of course, more potential revenue for Etisalat, and who knows, maybe we might even get better quality connections to the home?
