Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily) announced on Sunday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Qualcomm Inc. - the US developer of advanced wireless technologies, products and services.

The two companies have agreed to boost cooperation in several projects in the wireless telecommunications sector.

The MOU sets out a framework enabling Mobily to obtain assistance from Qualcomm in certain aspects of wireless network operation, including Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) digital wireless telecommunication technology and High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network planning, device specification and other training services that will be provided to Mobily personnel.

Khalid Al Kaf, Mobily's CEO said: ''Qualcomm has a substantial presence in the wireless communication market and through this MOU, we will be offered many advantages to meet our customers' needs."

Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm, said the MOU ''creates a path for both companies to explore deeper collaboration''.

"Introducing the most advanced new mobile services requires not only leading wireless technology, but also close collaboration among developers, device manufacturers and others who contribute to making services a success.

''Mobily is providing innovative services, and we are pleased at the prospect of applying Qualcomm's technical expertise and industry relationships to help them achieve their market vision," said Jacobs.

Mobily, the second mobile service operator in Saudi Arabia, has 96 percent network coverage and boasts the Middle East's largest 3.5G network, which is also the busiest in the world with daily data traffic of 40-terabytes.
