IBM and a raft of other silicon circuit makers have collaborated to release the first silicon-functional circuits for 45nm low-power process technology.

Big Blue, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, Infineon Technologies, and Samsung have also come up with design kits to assist developers in creating processors based on the new technology.

The 45nm process enables chip circuitry with higher performance-per-watt than the current industry standard 65nm. Using the 45nm process will allow chip makers such as Intel and AMD to make chips with twice as many transistors in a given area.
