Bahrain's telecom watchdog has announced that mobile phone customers in the kingdom will be able to keep their phone number when switching operators.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched its ‘I Love My Number’ scheme to boost choice and competitiveness in the mobile market.

The process, which should be available by the end of the year, will initially take two days and cost about BD10 ($26), reported the Gulf Daily News.

"We announced last year in the strategic review that one of our nine measures was to implement number portability to allow consumers to keep their numbers," TRA general director Alan Horne told a press conference.

"We see this as one of the more important measures that we - as a regulator - are taking to increase competitiveness and choice for the consumer.”
