Dell’s decision to introduce PCs that use chips from AMD represents a major change in its strategy, according to analyst group Gartner.

In a recent online advisory, the firm also said Dell’s financial performance — it’s net income dropped 51% drop in its fiscal second quarter — and decision to choose AMD were closely related as its Intel-only policy had reduced Dell’s competitiveness.

“To date, Dell has used only Intel processors in its PC product lines, and that decision has adversely impacted Dell’s competitiveness in terms of strategic direction, pricing and customer choice,” Gartner stated.
