High-definition (HD) television has been brought to life by E-Vision, which has become the first pay TV provider in the region to bring HD-quality programming to its customers.

Offering a picture quality four times better than standard definition, E-Vision will initially offer HD content to its subscribers through its Abu Dhabi TV, Luxe, Fashion TV, Showtime and Al Jazeera Sports channels, and is in talks with other content providers to add to its HD portfolio.

“With HD Television sales now surpassing Standard Definition TV sales according to global indicators, this move is clearly in line with what our customers are asking for with their savvy outlook and sophistication in settling for nothing but the very best in TV programming,” commented E-Vision’s CEO Humaid Rashid Sahoo.

E-Vision’s HD service will be available to customers through a new HD set top box which also includes PVR (Personal Video Recorder) features such as the ability to pause, rewind and record preferred TV shows.

Customers will need to pay a monthly fee of AED 30, with the HD set top box costing AED 999, to access 3 complementary HD channels. Subscribers of Showtime’s Cable Premier service can also enjoy an HD upgrade for an additional AED 45 per month.

1. The cost to upgrade to HDTV is way too much as compared to the number of HD channels avaialble.
2. The ads on their website is misleading as it suggests that all channels are HD.
3. Certain subscription packages will nbot have a single HD channel ...

Why pay more for the difference you cannot see. And that too for a few channels. And GOD knows when you favourite channel will be HD compatible. MEOW.

Opinion: I personaly think it is silly to pay for High Definition TV, specially when all over the globe it is being offered for free. The UAE government probably needs to take control here before the whole idea of having HDTV becomes more of a luxury(money making business) than a common standard. any how...... meow
