Qtel set to hit two million mobile customer mark
Qatar telecom operator has penetration rate of 121%, eyes further growth
Qatar telecom operator Qtel has revealed that its mobile customer base is set to hit the two million mark within the next two weeks.
To celebrate the achievement, Qtel is making prizes worth a total of QR500,000 available for 100 customers who activate new mobile accounts over the next fortnight, starting on Sunday.
With Qatar’s official population standing at 1.65m in May 2009, according to the Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA), the two million customer figure represents a penetration rate of 121 percent, one of the highest in the world.
Dr Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel, said: “Qtel is set to celebrate a major achievement when we reach the milestone of bringing two million mobile phone users into the Qtel family.
"Our achievement in building this company, even in an era of increased competition, helps contribute to the ongoing growth and development of Qatar, and we are very pleased to share this success with the people with this special competition.”
The company, which reported reaching 1.8 million mobile customers in March, has launched a significant range of new mobile services in the first half of 2009, as new competition from Vodafone Qatar begins.
