Food giant Nestlé has deployed mobile computers and bar code scanners from enterprise mobility company Symbol in its two Czech production plants, Zora Olomouc and Sfinx Holešov, as well as in one Slovak plant and in the warehouses of its German subsidiary Schöller.

Symbol said the deployment of its mobile computers and scanners will enable the Swiss-headquartered company to ensure reliable warehouse tracking of the raw materials contained in products. This is needed to meet European Union legal requirements.

Prior to the deployment, the company relied on a manual solution using paper-based forms, which was potentially vulnerable to human error.

Nestlé has deployed more than 150 mobile devices including 20 vehicle/fixed mount mobile computers, 40 rugged MC9000 mobile computers, 60 LS3408ER rugged bar code scanners, and P370 RF scanners from Symbol.

The devices collect and transfer information in real-time using barcodes and additional quantitative data, which is added manually using a keyboard either from a PC or the Symbol mobile computers.

Information, such as the name of the product, production series, and country of manufacture is then printed onto product labels.

“The mobility that Symbol has brought to us is a huge advantage as it allows important information, such as details of pallets in the warehouse, to be entered immediately into our systems, which increases data accuracy,” said Petr Trefil, IT manager of Nestlé Cesko.

In addition to tracking raw materials, the system also enables the firm to record all goods, packaging, and products produced in the plants.

Benefits of the system, include greatly improved record accuracy, faster data capture and provisioning, and data availability in real time, according to Symbol.

“Nestlé’s deployment demonstrates the versatility and lower total cost of ownership of Symbol’s rugged, enterprise class products. Businesses need to have a strong technology platform in place in order to support any enhancement projects,” commented Tarek Hassaniyeh, sales manager at Symbol Technologies Middle East.

Nestlé is the world’s leading food company and has operations around the world. Its global brands include Nescafe, Buitoni and Lean Cuisine.
