HP shipped more than 8.6 million printer products in EMEA during the first half of 2006, according to research house Gartner.

HP accounted for 41% of shipments as the overall number of units sold climbed 5% year-on-year to 22.08 million.

Gartner’s research includes sales of page printers, copiers and multifunction products (MFP). Colour page copier and inkjet MFP sales fuelled EMEA market growth in the first half of 2006 with shipments climbing 98% and 24% year-on-yearrespectively.

A greater range of colour offerings and lower average selling prices (ASPs) helped stimulate the market for colour printing solutions among business users.

Demand for single function inkjet products weakened as consumers instead opted for better value MFP alternatives — especially photo-centric MFP products.

Shipments of page printers increased 10% year-on-year as they became an affordable alternative to inkjet devices.

“Hewlett-Packard excelled in the colour page market by gaining 14% market share points from its competitors in the second quarter of 2006, which helped the company secure its domination in the first half of 2006,” said Cecile Drew, principal analyst at Gartner.

“It also performed well in the inkjet market thanks to a good mix of both MFPs and printer offerings, an aggressive advertising campaign across Europe and competitive prices.”

Canon picked up second place behind HP, growing its unit sales 6% year-on-year to 3.488 million units — 16.5% of the total addressable market.

Epson had a difficult first half, losing market share in some key countries, according to Gartner.

Third placed Epson’s unit sales slipped 15% year-on-year to 2.683 million units.

Brother was the growth star of the first half boosting unit sales 42% to 1.269 million and grabbing 6% market share.

Gartner attributes Brother’s sparkling performance to a strong MFP product line-up and aggressive promotions in the retail channel.

Both the inkjet and page technology markets for printers, copiers and multifunctional devices are on track to reach 54 million units in 2006, a 13% increase from last year.
