Abu Dhabi will be the world’s first city to boast super fast internet connection speeds following the installation of new technology, Etisalat claimed on Monday.

The UAE telecoms provider said 712,000 of customer homes and residences will be fitted with fibre to the home (FTTH) cables during this year’s second half.

Etisalat added the remaining emirates will be connected by 2011.

According to telecoms experts, internet speeds through FTTH connections are 20 to 100 times faster than typical cable modems and dial up lines.

“FTTH technology will bring about a paradigm shift in the communication sector, taking it to unprecedented levels,” said Khalifa Al Shamsi, Etisalat’s vice president of consumer marketing.

During the Telecom Leaders Roundtable Summit, Shamsi added: “With its high-speed internet offering speeds up to 100 mbps, this technology will boost adoption of new age internet services like IPTV, video on demand, and online gaming, creating future smart homes.”

Other benefits of FTTH include online health checks, three dimensional images and data, video conferencing and e-education, Shamsi said.

Apart from FTTH, Etisalat is also planning to roll out mobile broadband with increased bandwidth across the UAE.

The service will enable iPhone users to access the internet anywhere, while the company intends to provide 3G coverage to 99 percent of populated areas across the emirates.

It's nice to hear about etisalat that they are going to take a big step regarding the internet technology. They should have taken the decision very earlier in order to avoid the disappointment of many business people. FTTH technology is not something superb as they are announcing all around because in many poor countries in Asia already have long time ago. Therefore, UAE are still in the back place right now and they will even they upgrade because everywhere, internet is changing into Gigabit now a days which is the next generation for all countries although Japan and few countries already have it. We can see here that countries which have already FTTH they are thinking to upgrade to next generation such as Singapore they are changing to Gigabit connections to home users by 2011. So, ultimately Etisalat is still going to stay at the back. About the telecom service, people outside the UAE or even inside the UAE cannot make good communication and if there is no reasonable communications available then it is hard for corporate business users. Even though many big companies have their corporate office in UAE with expansive communication system. This time, if etisalat provides the high speed internet in a reasonable rate to every home users then we can say that somehow it is a wise decision. But if they charge very high like they are still charging with the existing then it is no use by investing for this kind of upgrades. I myself in Dubai right now and excluding my office, my home internet cable was changes few days back and hoping for something really good in accordance to price. Wish best of luck to etisalat of their aim.
