Yet another touchscreen smartphone will go on sale on June 2nd in the United States to meet high expectations and inevitable comparisons with the Apple iPhone head on.

The Palm Pre, which comes with a colourful touchscreen, a physical keyboard and a host of smartphone features, will be available exclusively on the Sprint network and cost $199.99 after rebate.

It won the ‘Best in Show’ award at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, which is when the comparisons to Apple’s iPhone really took off. Some of the most obvious differences include the presence of a physical keyboard, the ability to run multiple applications simulatenously without having to close any of them, a respectable 3 megapixel camera and a removable battery.

The new Palm Pre is described as a phone that “is always thinking ahead to make your life easier” and is up against some serious competition from both Apple and RIM’s BlackBerry which faced less than stellar reviews when its own touchscreen offering – Storm – got drenched.
